Abstract

The methanol extracts of Magnolia obovata, Liriodendron tulipifera, Reynoutria elliptica, and Commelina communis showed strong inhibiting activity on the growth of Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176 which has been known as a main cariogenic becterium. The fractionaion of the extracts, monitored with the bioassay, resulted in the isolation of the active components. Magnolol and honokiol were isolated from M. obovata, ¥â-liriodenolide from L. tulipifera, emodin from R. elliptica, harman and norharman from C. communis. The chemical structure and activity relationships of the lignans (magnolol and honokiol) and ¥â-carboline alkaloids (harman and norharman) are also discussed.
